Position: Post-Doctoral Researcher, with a contract duration of 2 years.

Location:

Genoa, at the Center for Human Technologies (CHT), specifically within the Electronic Design Laboratory (EDL).

About the Institute:

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is dedicated to advancing human-centered science and technology to address significant societal challenges. Our headquarters in Genoa collaborate closely with 11 other centers across Italy and two outposts in the United States, fostering excellence in both fundamental and applied research in diverse fields such as neuroscience, robotics, nanotechnology, and materials science.

Your Research Team:

You will be part of a diverse and interdisciplinary team, collaborating with experts in biomedical, mechanical, and electrical engineering, neuroscience, computational science, and robotics. This collaborative environment is designed to enhance research outcomes.

Research Focus:

The primary aim is to design a custom, battery-operated hardware device that facilitates navigation for individuals in smart urban environments. This device will integrate with a mobile software application and utilize various sensors and input mechanisms to enhance the mobility and independence of elderly individuals with visual impairments.

This role offers the chance to innovate and improve existing technologies, contributing to the body of knowledge in electronic engineering with a high Technology Readiness Level (TRL), and emphasizing technology transfer.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and prototype electronic systems using commercially available components.
  • Collaborate proactively within a multidisciplinary team that includes mechanical and software engineers.
  • Document the developed electronics to facilitate trials involving participants.

Essential Qualifications:

  • PhD in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Microelectronics, or related fields.
  • Proven experience in designing electronic circuits (custom electronic boards).
  • Strong background in firmware development for electronic systems.
  • Ability to effectively report, organize, and publish research findings.
  • Proficient in spoken and written English.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience in Electronic PCB Prototyping.
  • Familiarity with Arduino, C/C++, and Python programming languages.
  • Strong communication skills.
