Organizational Context

The UN Food Systems Coordination Hub (the Hub) supports nations in implementing food system transformation pathways developed during the UN Food Systems Summit, aiming to achieve the Agenda. FAO hosts the Hub in Rome on behalf of the UN system. The Hub's strategic work and decision-making are guided by an Oversight Steering Group comprising the Principals of FAO, WFP, IFAD, UN-DCO, and the UN Food Systems Task Force Leads (WHO and UNDP), with participation from the UN DSG.

The Hub plays a coordinating and connecting role, leveraging the capacities of the UN system and the expertise of the broader support ecosystem, serving countries by incentivizing existing institutions to fulfill their mandates systematically. The Hub operates under five coordination clusters:

  • Landing the Vision of Food Systems Transformation (Overarching Cluster)
  • Policy and Governance Cluster
  • Science and Knowledge Cluster
  • Strategic Partnerships and Collaboration Cluster
  • Finance and Investment Cluster

A key milestone in the Hub's work plan is organizing the 2nd UN Food Systems Summit Stocking Moment. The Senior Advocacy Specialist will play a pivotal role in defining and executing the Hub's communication strategy at the organizational level, ensuring that pertinent messaging reaches top international media outlets and news sources. The incumbent will provide guidance and expertise to the Hub's advocacy and communication experts in generating high-quality content from technical programs, events, policies, and reports to enhance the visibility of the Hub's work among Members, the UN system, and potential donors, as well as the international community.

The Senior Advocacy Specialist will report directly to the Director of the Hub.

Key Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Hub and in close collaboration with the Communication Departments of the supporting Agencies (e.g., FAO Office of Communications, OCC, Executive Office of the UN Secretary General), the incumbent will:

  • Establish strategic partnerships with individuals and organizations to produce content and promote the Hub's activities, as well as provide research insights to enhance communications.
  • Create authoritative, news-driven content to lead the narrative on food systems transformation, showcasing the impact of the UNFSS and the Hub, and maintaining momentum by highlighting concrete actions taken by governments and other actors.
  • Develop distribution strategies to maximize the impact of the content created, enhancing the visibility of the Hub's work across external channels.
  • Build and maintain media relations with key global media outlets and journalists to elevate the Hub's profile.
  • Prepare high-level statements, press remarks, and speeches for the Hub.
  • Coordinate with supporting Agencies to pitch press releases, stories, and op-eds to top international media outlets.
  • Ensure the Hub's prominent voice in various international media sources on matters related to food systems, National Pathways, and the UN Food Systems Summit.
  • Lead the Hub's advocacy and communication experts in timely dissemination of press releases and other informational materials.
  • Guide the team in conducting media monitoring and preparing coverage reports on specific issues.
  • Support liaison with the FAO Office of Communication and other Agencies to ensure compliance with UN standards and review processes.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

All communication materials will adhere to FAO standards and clearance processes, including FAOSTYLE, FAO terminology, and brand policies.

Candidate Assessment Criteria

Minimum Requirements

  • Advanced university degree in journalism, communication, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of relevant experience for category B and ten years for category A in journalism, communication, news production, and/or editing, or closely related fields, including experience with FAO or the UN System.
  • Working knowledge of English.
