About the Role

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Mechanical Engineer to join our Bioinspired Soft Robotics Research Line at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. The successful candidate will work in a dynamic and international environment, combining engineering and biology to design and develop new robotic solutions and advanced components inspired by nature.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop mechatronic systems for physically interfacing different robotic platforms
  • Develop actuation mechanisms for soft robotic manipulators
  • Design and development of mockup and setups
  • Procurement of materials
  • Interfacing with the mechanical workshop
  • Prototyping and testing
Requirements
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Manufacturing, or related fields
  • Documented previous experience in the development of mechanical systems of at least 2 years
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering basics
  • Proficiency in 3D drawing design and related tools (Siemens NX, SolidWorks, or others)
  • Experience and knowledge of fast prototyping and 3D printing technologies
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Strong communication and English language skills (written and spoken)
  • Teamwork
  • The ability to properly report, organize, and publish research data
Desirable Skills
  • Ph.D. in one of the fields mentioned above or related
  • Experience and knowledge of one or more of the following prototyping techniques and machining: versa laser, CNC machine, molding and casting, FDM or other 3D printing methods
  • Experience and knowledge of fabrication of soft materials parts and components
  • Previous experience in the design and realization of experimental robotic systems
  • Experience in the field of soft robotics and/or bioinspired robotics
