Position Overview: The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia is seeking outstanding candidates for a PhD position focused on the development of microscale neuroelectronic devices. This role is part of an international doctoral program in collaboration with the Open University, aiming to confer Doctorates in Health, Sustainable, and Human Technologies.
Eligibility Criteria: To qualify for the program, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A Master's degree or equivalent, which typically corresponds to a 4/5-year undergraduate MSc/MChem/Meng-style degree or a postgraduate Master's in the British system, or a second-level University degree in Italy.
- A minimum academic performance equivalent to an upper second class (2.1) in the UK system or 100/110 in the Italian grading system. Candidates with lower grades but with significant achievements (such as publications or specialized expertise) are encouraged to reach out to potential supervisors prior to applying.
- If English is not the candidate's first language, a valid IELTS certificate is required, with a minimum overall score of 6.5 and no less than 6.0 in any individual category.

The project aims to explore innovative neuromodulation strategies through the development of wireless, implantable, MRI-compatible micro-devices (dimensions: 100x100x100 μm³). Research Activities: The selected candidate will engage in the design and characterization of various CMOS circuit solutions for neural recording and stimulation. Additionally, the candidate will work on micro-structuring processes to fabricate and validate these neuro-devices. Collaborative efforts will be made with experienced researchers in CMOS design, micro/nano-structuring, and in-vivo electrophysiology.
Essential Qualifications:
- MSc or equivalent in Electronic/Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or Physics.
- Experience in microelectronics or microstructuring technologies.
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Matlab, Python, C++, or C# for data analysis.
- Familiarity with electronic circuit simulations.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Background in neuroscience.
- Experience with biosensors and bioelectronics.
- Knowledge of neural interfaces.
- Familiarity with (bio-)electrochemical sensors and electrochemistry.
