Senior Research AssociateWe invite applications for the Senior Research Associate (Level B) in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at UNSW Sydney. The role involves leading independent and team research in Physical Metallurgy Laboratories and developing expertise in high‑entropy brasses and bronzes.Compensation and Term$127K – $150K per annum, plus 17% superannuation and annual leave loadingFixed‑term contract, 12 monthsFull‑time, 35 hours per weekResponsibilitiesContribute independently or as a team member in industry‑based research focusing on the design, development and commercial application of advanced high‑entropy brasses and bronzes, particularly for plumbing or dual‑use free‑machining applications.Carry out fundamental and applied metallurgical research on the commercial development and processing of high‑entropy brasses and bronzes.Create scholarly impact recognized by peers in the advancement of disciplinary knowledge.Conduct research under limited supervision, independently or as part of a team, following discipline norms.Establish a personal research portfolio and begin developing independent research proposals.Contribute to the development of applications for competitive funding under senior colleague guidance.Participate as co‑investigator or chief investigator in competitive grant applications, or demonstrate active participation in research collaborations funded by competitive grants.Design research activities on commercialisation outcomes for high‑entropy brasses and bronzes for the plumbing sector and ancillary dual‑use technologies for free‑machining applications.Mentor and guide students and colleagues, and develop the next generation of academics through supervision of HDRs.Assist with program/project management, operation and maintenance of relevant laboratories.Engage with industry/commercial project partners to establish research requirements and trouble‑shoot projects.Align with and actively demonstrate the Code of Conduct and Values.Cooperate with health and safety policies and procedures of the university.QualificationsPhD in physical metallurgy or a related discipline, with relevant postdoctoral experience in alloy design, development and processing, preferably high‑entropy alloys.Experience in lab‑based metal‑processing technologies: alloy charge preparation, induction melting/alloying, arc‑furnace melting, casting, thermo‑mechanical processing.Experience in sample preparation and characterisation methods: general optical/electron microscopy, X‑ray diffraction, mechanical testing.Commitment to staying up‑to‑date with disciplinary knowledge and developments.Demonstrated track record in high‑quality, high‑impact research and capacity for research leadership.Significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.High‑level communication skills and ability to network effectively with diverse stakeholders.Proven ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships.Highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.Commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values, and understanding of relevant policies and guidelines.Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant training.Application DeadlineApplications close on January 22nd, 2025.ContactAssociate Professor Kevin Lawsemail: Pre‑Employment ChecksNational and International Criminal History checksEntitlement to work and ID checksWorking With Children checksCompletion of a Gender‑Based Violence Prevention DeclarationVerification of relevant qualificationsVerification of relevant professional membershipEmployment history and reference checksFinancial responsibility assessments/checksMedical checks and assessmentsEEO StatementUNSW is committed to equity, diversity and inclusion.
