Non Executive Director

**Location**: East Of England (Essex and Suffolk)

**Hours**: Two days a month on average

**About the role**

Thera East is looking for an experienced chairperson to join its board. Although the roles are unpaid, by joining us you can have a positive impact on the lives of people with a learning disability
- the people who are always at the centre of everything we do. We want to hear from you if you share our Vision and have the skills, dedication and time to help shape the organisation and develop its strategy for the future.

**About us**

We are a not-for-profit organisation, working in Essex and Suffolk, that supports people with a learning disability.

We are also part of the charitable Thera Group, led by a registered charity, Thera Trust. Founded in 1998, the group now provides a range of support across the UK for around 3,000 people with a learning disability through a group of 15 not-for-profit companies.

The whole group shares a Vision that we bring to life by ensuring that we have leaders with a learning disability in senior executive and non-executive roles.

We help people to live the lives they choose:

- By supporting people to be as independent as they can in their own homes;
- By providing help to learn new skills such as managing money and going shopping;
- By empowering people to make choices in their day-to-day lives and in the community;
- By assisting with finding paid employment, apprenticeships or volunteer placements;
- By helping people with a learning disability find the right home for them.

**What we are looking for**

We particularly want to hear from people with experience or knowledge of the adult social care sector or an interest in it. However, please get in touch with us if you can offer:

- A strong commitment to our person-led approach and Thera¿s Vision
- The skill to act as a critical friend to the executive team
- A willingness to promote the rights of people with a learning disability
- A strategic perspective and the ability to prioritise between competing demands
- The ability to monitor and assess company performance and key risks
- Good listening skills and an understanding of how to add constructively to discussions
- A willingness to challenge respectfully when necessary and embrace change when needed
- An effectiveness in building new relationships and developing a team
- An understanding of how to shape a positive organisational culture

In your role you will complement the executive team, bringing skills that will benefit the whole board. **The time commitment**
- The chairperson role will require a typical commitment that averages two days per month.
