This role is within SEI Industry Operations that operationally manages the Italian B2B business which has recently become part of Shell Energy, Trading and Supply. As a member of this team of currently 6 professionals you will report to the Industry Operations Team Lead – Milan.

In this role you will work closely with the local Sales team, Supply team and Traders, other Operations teams and Support functions.

The role requires a strong understanding of Industry Operations (mainly demand forecasting, gas & power balancing and logistics). You will need to demonstrate your ability to proactively collaborate with a wide and diverse set of stakeholders in a constructive manner for the delivery of all business goals in Shell Energy .

What is the Role?

SEI Operations is responsible for the flawless delivery of natural gas and power to Shell customers in Italy:

  • Balancing Group management
  • Customer demand forecasting
  • Transport logistics
  • Volume allocations and settlement
  • Interface between Italian Sales/Supply office /owners of other relevant contracts in the Italian portfolio.

In this role, you will:

  • Work within a highly professional sub-team that is responsible for customer demand forecasting.
  • Contribute to minimizing portfolio imbalances and imbalance cost which is the central KPI for the team.
  • Ensure top quartile performance in managing imbalance cost is a key success factor for SEI's competitiveness.
  • Liaise with grid operators, customers, sales and other business functions.
  • Develop your learning and learning culture within Operations and maintain an open and trustful partnership with commercial teams and functions.
  • Be held accountable for your HSSE, Compliance and Regulatory obligations.

You will be responsible for:

  • Owning the forecasting system and the tools used in the daily work.
  • Setting up and maintaining short term and lon term forecasting models for SEI's customers.
  • Monitoring the portfolio and running daily forecasting processes, aiming at operational excellence and continuous improvement.
  • Keeping track of correct volume flow information as basis for forecasting.
  • Establishing and maintaining customer interaction aiming at improving system generated forecasts.
  • Keeping track and monitoring of the relevant KPIs.
  • Continuos update and upgrade of the Forecasting tools, including regulatory changes.
  • Continuously reviewing new deal pipeline and preparing forecasting process for new customers.
  • Providing sales and other teams with advice on aspects relevant for forecasting both during deal making process and delivery.
  • Monitoring relevant regulatory development especially regarding balancing rules, imbalance and settlement regime.
  • Continuously analysing and improving efficiency and performance of the forecasting system and associated processes to ensure they remain fit for purpose.
  • Working with grid operators, customers, traders, originators and other business functions to ensure operational risks are understood, effectively managed and new capabilities are developed in a robust and timely manner.
  • Checking and process steer on the nominations.
  • Analysis of the definitive allocations/consumptions.
  • Monitor network maintenance and shutdown of I&C customers.

What We Need from You

  • A key challenge in this role is the combination of commercial mindset and operational excellence, which requires high commitment to the day-to-day business, often within fixed and tight deadlines.
  • The incumbent needs to quickly acquire a very good understanding of the relevant regulatory rules and procedures in the Italian natural gas and power market and to keep up with the ongoing development.
  • Operational excellence is essential: Errors can have a significant impact on SEI's bottom-line, set priorities, continuously deliver accurate results and look out for process improvements.
  • University degree in engineering, economics or similar
  • Demonstrated analytical and advanced numerical skills
  • Affinity to and experience with relevant business IT tools - very good knowledge of Excel/Python
  • Affinity to quantitative modeling, experience with statistical methods (multiple regression, neural network) desirable
  • Proactive behavior, excellent time management and work organization 
  • Good communication skills in Italian and English. Preferably experience (3+ years' experience in demand Forecasting/Balancing and Operations in the Gas & Power sector) in:
    • Working in an operational environment
    • Understanding of natural gas/power balancing, knowledge of gas & power transportation/distribution (preference).
    • Trading / portfolio management
    • Working in virtual teams
    • Working under tight deadlines
