Job Title: Socio-environmental Safeguards Specialist

FAO is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Socio-environmental Safeguards Specialist to join our team in Brazil. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that our projects are implemented in a socially and environmentally responsible manner.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct preliminary surveys of socio-environmental issues related to project scope and elaborate socio-environmental safeguards.
  • Establish working relations with other consultants and stakeholders to ensure effective project implementation.
  • Participate in project team meetings and briefings to ensure alignment with project objectives.
  • Develop and submit work plans to project coordinators and supervisors.
  • Conduct stakeholder consultations and prepare reports on key information.
  • Assist in identifying potential stakeholders and ensure their inclusion in project design and decision-making.
  • Obtain feedback on draft project documents from key stakeholders and respond to comments and concerns in a timely manner.
  • Survey socio-environmental issues directly associated with project scope, including economic characteristics of beneficiary communities, socio-ethnic composition of project regions, and physical and environmental features.
  • Prospect principal socio-environmental issues that the project shall take into due account, including access to land, environmental regularization, and illegal deforestation.
  • Elaborate risk assessment for the project and propose mitigation actions for identified risks.
  • Interview key stakeholders and prepare reports on key information.
  • Propose suitable implementation of FAO and GEF social environmental guidelines within the project proposal.
  • Coordinate and support Mamirauá Institute to conduct consultations with indigenous populations and FPIC protocols.
  • Elaborate Indigenous People Plan.
  • Contribute to addressing cross-cutting issues such as gender, generational, and intercultural approaches, knowledge/communication planning, and M&E parts of the project.
Requirements:
  • Full university degree in environment, environmental sciences, anthropology, ethnology, or equivalent.
  • At least 5 years of documented professional experience related to the area of work of this position.
  • Working knowledge (level C) of English and Portuguese.
  • Brazilian Nationality.
