Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations + Innovation (MCO+I) is the driving force behind our cloud infrastructure. This team is tasked with the management of over 200 Microsoft web portals and online services globally, focusing on infrastructure, security, compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability. We are in search of a dedicated and energetic individual to contribute to the development of the network that supports the world's largest online services. The role of the Construction Superintendent (CSA) necessitates exceptional interpersonal, communication, and organizational abilities, along with a robust background in data center design, engineering, controls, and operational necessities, as well as extensive experience in electrical and mechanical systems. This position will lead all field-related mission-critical activities and collaborate with the Data Center Development (DCD) Project Manager and subcontractors to ensure effective execution. The DCD Construction Superintendent is ultimately accountable for the comprehensive project delivery at each site.

The DCD Construction Superintendent must ensure that every project adheres to the Data Center Development (DCD) Guidelines and standards, which may evolve based on best practices and lessons learned from prior projects and industry advancements. The DCD Superintendent will address site conflicts and inquiries regarding design drawings and specifications through Requests for Information (RFIs) with the design team to facilitate project timelines. In overseeing project delivery, this role aligns team objectives, business processes, vendor management strategies, and cross-group collaboration efforts with the Data Center Development Project Strategy. This alignment fosters effective client relationship management and enhances cost management and project delivery efficiency. The DCD Construction Superintendent will be a staunch advocate for maintaining a safe work environment, as safety is one of the four pillars of CO+I's mission in delivering cloud capacity, alongside Quality, Schedule adherence, and Cost Management. Collaboration with Microsoft Security, Microsoft IT (MSIT), Legal, Project Engineering, MS Business Risk Management, and other internal teams is essential to uphold the corporate vision and objectives for the project. The DCD Construction Superintendent (CSA) reports directly to the Regional Manager of Data Center Development for the respective region and supports the strategic and tactical execution of data center projects.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Extensive experience in the development of Mission Critical Facilities
  • Background working with a General Contractor or trade
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • In-depth understanding of Mechanical and Electrical systems, including integrated testing, Method of Procedures (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for installation, functionality, and troubleshooting
  • Experience in directing and/or supporting commissioning efforts
  • Willingness to travel as required
  • Ability to independently manage deadlines and support team members
  • Capacity to influence cross-disciplinary teams
  • Knowledge of Construction Health & Safety standards
  • Experience managing multiple large-scale, multifaceted projects

Meeting Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements is essential for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, specialized security screenings: passing the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Responsibilities

Business Processes:

  • Develop and maintain best practices to identify and integrate cost-effective solutions
  • Drive the deployment of solutions that can be shared globally across DCD projects
  • Facilitate decision-making to drive solutions, schedules, and manage changes as necessary
  • Utilize influence, strategies, and negotiation skills to identify options and recommend solutions

Communication:

  • Regularly review cost and KPI metrics, process/policy communications with client partners
  • Serve as the single point of contact for project development and delivery
  • Coordinate meetings and activities involving vendors, cost managers, and integration of lessons learned
  • Attend scheduled owner/architect/contractor (OAC) and other project meetings, providing reports as necessary
  • Report project progress on scope, schedule, and budget weekly or as required
  • Provide weekly project status updates in accordance with DCD standards

Accountability:

  • Responsible for developing, managing, and reporting on safety, scope, and schedule
  • Direct fiscal responsibility for the approved project budget
  • Work independently in support of the DCD Project
  • Conduct daily site inspections to ensure compliance with safety and schedule
  • Ensure that all mission-critical activities meet the highest quality standards and comply with relevant codes, regulations, and specifications
  • Oversee start-up, commissioning, troubleshooting, and handover of the project to the operations team

Vendor Management and Contract Compliance:

  • Provide oversight and performance management of vendors (contractors)
  • Effectively manage manpower, equipment, and materials to ensure smooth MEP installations according to plan, including coordinating deliveries, scheduling labor, and resolving resource conflicts
  • Review and approve vendor scope of work and design review of site and building plans
  • Maintain accurate records of all mission-critical activities, including daily logs, progress reports, change orders, and as-built drawings. This documentation is vital for tracking project milestones, identifying areas for improvement, and resolving disputes.
