Job Summary

The Grounds Maintenance Specialist will work under the direction of assigned supervisors within the Physical Plant Department at Lee University. This role is responsible for maintaining the university grounds, performing minor repairs to equipment, and other tasks to ensure a safe and attractive environment.

Responsibilities
  • Examine and police university grounds daily, removing litter, branches, and debris, and emptying designated waste containers.
  • Remove weeds manually or with equipment, mow grass, and trim turf and ornamentals using power mowers, trimmers, and other equipment.
  • Utilize pressure washing equipment to maintain and clean sidewalks, breezeways, building entrances, and porches.
  • Maintain university parking lots and streets by removing debris, grass clippings, and garbage.
  • Remove snow and ice using power snow blowers, chemical ice melters, and other equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance and upkeep on grounds equipment and tools.
  • Work independently with minimal direction and adhere to schedules.
  • Provide support and manpower to other university and physical plant departments as directed.
Requirements
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education and experience in grounds care.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and temperature extremes.
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and express ideas effectively.
  • Valid Tennessee driver's license and ability to be added to the university vehicle insurance policy.
Physical Demands
  • Ability to stand, climb, walk, stoop, reach, bend, kneel, twist, and lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Work in dirty, dusty environments without health issues.
  • Exposed to noise and vibration from operating machinery.
Work Environment
  • Work primarily outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
  • Estimated 85% of time spent outside and 15% inside.
