Job Summary: We are seeking a highly skilled Veterinary Medical Assistant to join our team at the U.S. Army Medical Command. As a Veterinary Medical Assistant, you will assist veterinarians in preparing for and during surgical procedures, including preparing surgery packs, scalpel blades, and suture material. You will also monitor patients using anesthetic machines and serve as a scrubbed surgical assistant. Additionally, you will apply knowledge of preventive care, disease prevention, lifestyle risks, and veterinary care to provide individualized wellness counseling to clients. You will prepare and administer vaccinations, oral and topical medications to patients as prescribed by the veterinarian. You will continuously inform medical staff of changes in the general condition of patients during surgical procedures. You will also prepare and dispense prescription medication according to veterinarian instructions. You will apply knowledge of common topics to assist clients in solving common husbandry problems. You will assist the facility in obtaining local credentialing for surgical, anesthetic, dental, and diagnostic procedures as required by the patient load and manning of the clinic.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist veterinarians in preparing for and during surgical procedures
  • Monitor patients using anesthetic machines
  • Prepare and administer vaccinations, oral and topical medications to patients as prescribed by the veterinarian
  • Inform medical staff of changes in the general condition of patients during surgical procedures
  • Prepare and dispense prescription medication according to veterinarian instructions
  • Apply knowledge of common topics to assist clients in solving common husbandry problems
  • Assist the facility in obtaining local credentialing for surgical, anesthetic, dental, and diagnostic procedures as required by the patient load and manning of the clinic

Requirements:

  • Direct Deposit and Social Security Card is required
  • Meet qualification/eligibility/background requirements for this position
  • A one year probationary period may be required
  • Ability to work occasional Saturdays for special events
  • Satisfactorily complete a physical examination (to include all mandated immunizations to work in a veterinary environment) prior to entrance on duty
  • Must not have an aversion to animals, blood, bodily fluids, animal tissues, strong odors, needles, or sharp instruments
  • Ability to lift animals and supplies up to 40 pounds, and on occasion greater than 40 pounds with the help of others
  • Long periods of standing, restraining, kneeling, and reaching, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Animal Health Assistant (Full Performance), NF-03: A minimum of six (6) months demonstrated experience directly related to the duties required in the position that must have been gained through practical application in a Veterinary Medical setting and which demonstrates the knowledge, clinical skills, and abilities essential to perform successfully in accordance with the guidelines of the AVMA - American Veterinary Medical Association or equivalent.
  • Best Qualified: Possess or have the ability to reactivate/obtain a registration, license, or certification as a veterinary assistant or higher through an accredited program. Possess basic supply management experience which includes: ordering supplies, maintaining sufficient stock levels, completing monthly inventory counts and documenting expiration dates of in stock medications and vaccines.

Education: This job does not have an education qualification requirement.
