Agroforestry Program Specialist

Reporting Structure

The consultants/subscribers will be accountable to the Senior Forestry Officer/Team Leader of the Forestry and Livelihoods Team, with direct oversight from the Forestry Officer specializing in Agroforestry.

Technical Focus Areas

The assignments will bolster the Forestry Division in executing its normative work, projects, and other initiatives related to agroforestry at global, regional, and national levels, focusing on: planning, design, and management of agroforestry systems, alongside the formulation of agroforestry-related policies, strategies, knowledge products, and capacity development resources.

Key Responsibilities

The specialist(s) will assist in agroforestry initiatives by (specific tasks for each consultant/subscriber will be determined separately):

• Coordinating publications, including an agroforestry monitoring study, guidance for Farmer Field School Agroforestry facilitation, an agroforestry business case handbook, etc.;

• Collecting, analyzing, and reviewing the latest scientific and relevant information, including best practices and case studies;

• Composing summaries of the aforementioned analyses for forthcoming publications, incorporating graphs, tables, and other data visualization materials;

• Aiding in the preparation of reports, guidelines, and other publications;

• Supporting the development and, if suitable, the delivery of capacity-building and training materials;

• Contributing to the coordination, execution, and management of ongoing projects and activities in alignment with FAO and donor regulations, procedures, and systems;

• Assisting in the formulation of new projects/programs in accordance with FAO and donor regulations, procedures, and systems;

• Participating in the organization of regional and/or global events; and

• Undertaking any other tasks as required.

Assessment Criteria

Minimum Qualifications


• A university degree in forestry, agriculture, natural resources, biological and environmental sciences, rural development, or related fields.

• Two to four years of relevant experience for Consultants Category C, at least five years for Consultants Category B, and at least ten years for Consultants Category A in areas related to the planning, design, and management of agroforestry systems, agroforestry policy, and/or capacity development.

• Proficient working knowledge (level C) of English.

Selection Considerations


• Limited knowledge (level B) of one of the other official FAO languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is considered advantageous.

• Work experience across various global regions, particularly in developing countries and nations with transitioning economies.

• Extent of relevant work experience in the planning, design, and management of agroforestry systems; development and implementation of agroforestry policies and strategies; agroforestry-related capacity development.

• Experience in drafting technical, scientific, and policy documents in English.

• Experience in operational support, including technical and financial reporting.

• Familiarity with FAO activities, policies, and procedures will be regarded as an asset.
