Organizational Context

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) plays a crucial role in achieving the Agenda through its Strategic Framework by supporting the transition to more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. This is aimed at enhancing production, nutrition, environmental health, and overall quality of life, ensuring that no one is left behind.

The Markets and Trade Division (EST) is responsible for monitoring and analyzing developments and trends in agricultural commodity markets at international, regional, and national levels. It collects and disseminates comprehensive market and policy information for major traded commodities, especially those critical to food security, and conducts forward-looking outlook studies. The Division also provides technical support and capacity development to FAO Members in these areas.

Reporting Structure

The Consultant/PSA will report directly to the Secretary of the World Banana Forum (WBF), under the overall guidance and supervision of the Senior Economist/Team Leader of the Responsible Global Value Chains in EST.

Technical Focus

Key areas of technical support include:

  • Facilitating multi-stakeholder working groups.
  • Analyzing global trade and socio-economic statistics.
  • Assessing sustainable production costs and living wages.
  • Conducting due diligence and promoting responsible business practices.
  • Engaging in quantitative and qualitative research.
  • Analyzing decent work and gender equity issues.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitating and managing the operations of the WBF's Working Groups focused on Labour Rights and Distribution of Value, ensuring the implementation of their work plans and reporting.
  • Liaising with Working Group members to organize meetings, prepare documents, and provide support for their decisions.
  • Identifying funding opportunities for Working Group priorities and preparing project proposals.
  • Coordinating project implementation and providing technical support for capacity development activities.
  • Leading research and analysis on socio-economic sustainability issues in the banana industry.
  • Collaborating with FAO departments and external organizations to establish relevant partnerships.
  • Managing knowledge-sharing activities related to the Working Groups and promoting the WBF.
  • Preparing reports and documents on topics related to the WBF mandate.
  • Supporting efforts to increase WBF membership and disseminate information on achievements.
  • Implementing the WBF's Action Plan and decisions from the Steering Committee and Advisory Board.
  • Carrying out any other organizational and technical tasks as required.

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree or advanced degree in a relevant field such as Social and Economic Sciences, Business Administration, or Public Policy focused on Sustainable Development.
  • At least two years of relevant experience for university degree holders or one year for advanced degree holders in project facilitation.
  • Working knowledge of English and Spanish.

Technical/Functional Skills

  • Experience in facilitating international networks or partnerships.

  • Familiarity with remote support and virtual stakeholder engagement.
  • Knowledge of the fruit sector and FAO's operational environment is advantageous.

  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines.

Selection Criteria

  • Knowledge of French is desirable.
  • Experience in advocacy, capacity development, and technical assistance related to responsible business conduct.
  • Work experience in UN agencies or major international organizations.
  • Experience in the agricultural sector, particularly in the fresh produce industry.
