Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is a United Nations entity established in 1968 to support countries worldwide in preventing crime and facilitating criminal justice. UNICRI is mandated to assist intergovernmental, governmental and non-governmental organizations in formulating and implementing improved policies in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice. UNICRI's goals are:
• to advance understanding of crime-related problems;
• to foster just and efficient criminal justice systems;
• to support the respect of international instruments and other standards;
• to facilitate international law enforcement cooperation and judicial assistance. This position is envisaged within UNICRI initiative "Assessing and Addressing the Nexus between Organized Crime and Terrorism in Africa", aimed at enhancing understanding of how crime and terrorism intersect across diverse African contexts. The project empowers local, national, and regional stakeholders to prevent, investigate, and prosecute the convergence of terrorism and crime through research, capacity-building, and awareness-raising. Under the supervision of the Programme Officer, the incumbent will perform the following tasks:
• Conduct research on terrorism, organized crime, and illicit trafficking on selected regions, especially concerning the African continent.
• Support the development of analytical reports, policy briefs, and strategic communication materials.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of context-specific awareness campaigns.
• Draft background documents, talking points, presentations, and outreach materials.
• Assist with empowerment actions among civil society actors to develop good practices to improve community resilience.
• Contribute to the design and implementation of training workshops, ensuring that research findings inform the development of materials aimed at reinforcing institutional capabilities to address the nexus between terrorism and crime.
• Participate in coordination meetings and assist in workshops preparation.
• Perform other project-related duties as required.

Qualifications/special skills

An advanced University degree (Master or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international development, criminal law, criminology, or related fields is required. Work experience is not required for fellows with a Master's degree in the required field. Previous experience – academic, professional, or volunteer-related – in primary data collection in security and crime prevention through qualitative and/or quantitative methods (surveys, focus groups, and stakeholder interviews) and analytical outputs production is desirable Experience in developing awareness and outreach initiatives through social media content, workshop toolkits, and multilingual communication materials is also desirable Experience in engaging and maintaining efficient communication with a varied range of stakeholders is desirable Previous relevant experience with the United Nations or similar large international organizations and/or in law enforcement is desirable
