Modena, Emilia-Romagna, Italia Machinelab Limited A tempo pieno

*This role is based in Machinelab in Ireland onsite *

Overview

MachineLab designs and delivers high-performance automation systems for the pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors.

We combine precision mechanical engineering, advanced automation, and creative problem-solving to build systems that challenge convention and perform flawlessly in regulated production environments.

We are now seeking a Senior Design Engineer to join our team and take ownership of mechanical design for bespoke automation machinery.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role requiring strong technical ability, attention to detail, and the confidence to lead projects from concept through to commissioning.

You will work closely with Electrical, Pneumatic, and Software Engineers to develop high-speed, high-precision automation equipment — and you'll have the freedom to design innovative solutions for complex manufacturing challenges.

This position offers a clear progression path to Lead Design Engineer or Engineering Manager as MachineLab continues to scale.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design & Development

  • Lead the mechanical design of bespoke automation systems using 3D CAD (SolidWorks or similar).
  • Develop robust and efficient mechanisms, assemblies, and tooling solutions for high-speed motion and precision handling.
  • Create and maintain detailed 3D models, manufacturing drawings, and BOMs.
  • Design for manufacturability, serviceability, and cleanability in GMP and life science environments.
  • Specify mechanical and pneumatic components — actuators, cylinders, valves, sensors, bearings, and drive systems.
  • Integrate motion, pneumatics, and control architecture seamlessly into the mechanical design.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead design reviews, risk assessments, and FMEA sessions.
  • Collaborate closely with electrical and software teams to ensure IO, control, and motion requirements are fully supported by design.
  • Provide clear direction to the toolroom, assembly, and build teams.
  • Work directly with suppliers to confirm manufacturability and source appropriate materials.
  • Support on-site commissioning and provide hands-on troubleshooting when required.

Project Ownership

  • Take responsibility for assigned projects from concept through to delivery.
  • Manage design timelines, technical documentation, and revision control.
  • Liaise directly with customers to define specifications and resolve technical questions.
  • Ensure projects meet functional, performance, and compliance standards.
  • Support the validation process (IQ/OQ/PQ) with design documentation and traceability.

Continuous Improvement

  • Contribute to the standardisation of mechanical modules, subassemblies, and design practices.
  • Identify and implement process improvements in design workflow and documentation.
  • Mentor junior design engineers and provide training on best practices and modelling standards.
  • Participate in R&D and prototype development for new automation platforms.

Leadership & Progression

This role is ideal for a technically strong, ambitious engineer ready to grow into a leadership position within a fast-paced, expanding company.

Progression may include:

  • Leading multiple design projects simultaneously.
  • Overseeing mechanical design standards and templates.
  • Mentoring junior engineers and coordinating cross-functional reviews.
  • Transitioning into Lead Design Engineer or Engineering Manager roles.

MachineLab actively supports professional development, continuous learning, and technical excellence.

Essential Requirements

  • Degree or HND in Mechanical, Mechatronic, or Automation Engineering (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical design experience in special-purpose or automation machinery.
  • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Fusion 360).
  • Experience with motion design, pneumatics, and machine safety standards.
  • Excellent understanding of tolerancing, fits, and manufacturing methods.
  • Practical knowledge of materials, machining, and assembly.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver on tight deadlines.

Desired Requirements

  • Experience in pharmaceutical or medical device automation.
  • Knowledge of servo motion systems, robotics, or magnetic track technology.
  • Familiarity with CE marking, risk assessment, and technical file documentation.
  • Exposure to vacuum systems, cleanroom design, or aseptic handling.
  • Hands-on experience supporting assembly, testing, or commissioning.

Why Join MachineLab

At MachineLab, you'll work at the forefront of pharmaceutical automation — developing innovative machinery that blends precision engineering, digital control, and creative design. We offer a dynamic environment where talented engineers can grow fast, take ownership, and shape real products that make an impact in regulated industries. Our culture is bold, technical, and quality-driven — and we're building a team that reflects that energy.
