European University Institute (EUI) at a glance:

The EUI
School of Transnational Governance (STG) trains tomorrow's leaders on the concepts, methods

and practices of governance beyond the state. It offers policy leader fellowships, executive training and high
- level policy dialogues. The School launched a new Master's programme in transnational governance in 2020.

Employment details

Contract type Part-time 10/30 (13 hours and 20 minutes/ week)

Length of contract 9 months, start date negotiable

This contract may be further renewed (several times and conditional to the

availability of funds), leading to an extension of the period of service up to a total

of 5 years, including the first contract period.

Salary indication and Grade:
ASTAC3, step1

grade
The basic net monthly salary after taxes is approximately 1,170 Euro, plus
allowances if applicable.

About the project

Project Director STG Director Prof. Alexander Stubb

Project details The
Transnational Democracy Programme will focus its core remit on delivering
a conceptual and strategic approach for institutionalizing a permanent Citizens'
Assembly and participatory eco-system in the European Union. This project will
build on previous evaluations of the Conference on the Future of Europe, and in
particular its innovative transnational citizens' panels, to deliver propositive,
action-oriented research.

Job description The research assistant will provide research support to the Director of the project.

Main tasks include:

  • Collaborating with external practitioners in leading the development of a
scientific blueprint for a transnational European citizens' assembly;

  • Producing original research on the links between deliberative and direct
democracy in a comparative lens;

  • Curating an archive of relevant academic and policy research on deliberative
democratic innovation within the STG's Transnational Democracy Observatory;

  • Developing and mobilising relevant networks to assist in codesigning the
assembly blueprint, attending and reporting back on relevant events in the field,
assisting in fundraising.

Qualifications and experience

Qualifications and Essential:

Experience

  • MA (or equivalent according to EHEA) in a relevant Social Science or
Humanities Discipline;

  • 2 years of postgraduate research and/or policyrelated experience;
  • Proven knowledge and experience in working with teams of deliberative
and/or direct democracy practitioners at pan-European level;

  • Previous research or professional experience on the interfaces between
direct and deliberative democracy.

Desirable:

  • Demonstrated experience in publishing targeted at diverse audiences: e.g.
in academia, policy and media;

  • Proven engagement with the Conference on the Future of Europe and
follow-up debates;

  • Proven experience in presenting at international conferences.

Languages Excellent knowledge of English, both written and spoken (CEFR level: C1 or
above). Knowledge of other languages constitutes an advantage.
