Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) is an inter-disciplinary research centre at
- the heart of the European University Institute (EUI). It was established in 1992 to complement the four EUI
- disciplinary departments (Economics, History and Civilization, Law, Political and Social Sciences) with the
- aim to be involved in both basic and policy research, collaborate with other centres of excellence in Europe,
- provide opportunities for young scholars and promote dialogue with the world of practice. The Centre's goal
- is to maintain an environment and support structure that fosters intellectual curiosity and excellent research.

  • The
research agenda of the Centre is currently guided by three major themes: Integration, Governance and

  • Democracy; Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and 21st Century World Politics and Europe.
The
Florence School of Regulation (FSR) is a centre of excellence for independent discussion and
knowledge exchange with the purpose of improving the quality of European regulation and policy. We
deliver academic research, training and policy events in the areas of Energy & Climate, Transport and Water
& Waste.

Employment details

Contract type Full-time (30/30, 40 hours/week)

Length of contract 12 months, start date as soon as possible
This contract may be further renewed (several times and conditional to the
availability of funds), leading to an extension of the period of service up to a total of
5 years, including the first contract period.

Salary indication and Grade:
ASTAC1e, step 1

grade
The basic net monthly salary after taxes is approximately 2,110 Euro, plus
allowances if applicable.

About the project

Project Directors Professor Leonardo Meeus and RSCAS Director Erik Jones

Project details The Florence School of Regulation (FSR) Gas area acts as a platform for debate
and exchange of best practices between regulators, academics, representatives
from EU institutions, industry, and other key market players in the European
energy sector. The area develops applied research, policy events, and training on
the most topical electricity policy and regulatory issues. By performing these
activities, it aims to be at the interface between the world of practice and
traditional academic research.

Job description The research assistant will provide research assistance to the Directors of the
project

Main tasks include:

  • Supporting contributions to collaborative research projects on topics
related to natural gas, hydrogen and other renewable and low-carbon
gases;

  • Supporting applied research in the field of gas networks and markets
regulation and policy;

  • Supporting contributions to the production of content and materials for
training courses, such as those on the EU Gas Network Codes,
Specialised Training on the Regulation of gas markets, Clean molecules
for the energy transition and to their implementation;

  • Providing practical support to the online and residential activities organised
by the gas team, such as research seminars, policy workshops and
debates, online publications, etc.;

Qualifications and experience

Qualifications and Essential:

Experience

  • BA in Economics or Engineering. Other degrees might be considered if
coupled with relevant additional experiences and skills;

  • Proven knowledge of EU policymaking and of EU energy policy and
regulation;

  • Proven understanding of the basic features of gas systems and markets;
  • Ability to work in team and follow multiple projects in parallel proven
by previous experience;

  • Demonstrated interest in the economics and regulation of energy networks
and their evolution due to digitalisation, decarbonisation and
decentralisation.

Desirable:

  • Proven experience in previous research projects and policy analysis
supported by relevant publications (preferably related to electricity);

  • MA or other qualifications in a relevant discipline.

Languages Excellent knowledge of English, both spoken and written (CEFR level: C1 or
above). Knowledge of other languages constitutes an advantage.
