In order to be admitted into the ARC program, the minimum requirements are
i. a Masters-level degree, which broadly corresponds to a 4/5-year undergraduate MSc/MChem/Meng-style degree or to a postgraduate Masters in the British system, or to a second level University degree in Italy;
iii. where English is not the applicant’s first language, a valid IELTS (International English Language Testing System) certificate. The minimum acceptable score is an overall 6.5, with no less than 6.0 in any of the four categories

One PhD fellow position **will be available from April 1st 2024** in the Neuromodulation of Cortical and Subcortical Circuits led by Dr. Raffaella Tonini.

**Title of the project**: Micro
- and macrocircuit interactions in the combinatorial neuromodulation of effort versus time trade-off
- Description_: Decision-making processes must compute benefit versus cost. This computation is influenced by positive or negative situational valence stimuli that trigger the release of distinct combinations of
neuromodulators. While the mechanisms by which rewards influence behavior are well studied, little is known about those controlling behavioral costs. This is particularly true for the neural basis of the effort versus time trade-off (ETT) (i.e., how humans and other animals are willing to expend energy to move and obtain rewards sooner than later) in both normal and pathological conditions. Context-dependent modulations of ETT are critical for adaptive decision-making and motor control which are affected in several neuropsychiatric conditions.
By combining behavior, optogenetic, and large-scale neuronal imaging the project will investigate how the dynamic patterning of interacting neuromodulatory circuits influences ETT during a naturalistic foraging task adapted to freely running. Computational models will be used to extract meaningful statistical parameters describing individual foraging dynamics (i.e., sensitivity to effort, time, and reward) and correlate them with neuromodulatory signals.
