Senior Consultant in Sustainable Investment Strategies

At ERM, we are dedicated to assisting our Private Equity partners in their mission to reduce carbon emissions across their portfolio companies, thereby generating value and investing in the shift towards a low-carbon economy. Our Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing Team is experiencing substantial growth while continuing to serve a robust client base of private equity and infrastructure investors.

We are seeking a Principal Consultant to enhance our EMEA operations, collaborating with ERM's diverse industry teams and business lines to craft 'Investment Grade' decarbonization strategies that align with the objectives of both portfolio companies and General Partners, ensuring swift implementation.

The Principal Consultant will leverage existing client relationships while cultivating new connections within the private markets investment sector. You will provide leadership that inspires and engages staff at all levels, contributing to ERM's mission of delivering value-driven decarbonization strategy development and execution.

  • Formulating commercial strategies to identify and secure new business opportunities that drive significant revenue growth.
  • Overseeing the initiation and execution of our clients' decarbonization initiatives, collaborating with their ESG, climate, investment, and operational teams, as well as portfolio company management, to develop comprehensive decarbonization and energy transition plans.
  • Partnering with our clients' ESG, investment, and operational teams to design and implement 'Investment Grade' decarbonization strategies during the holding period for both new and existing investments, ensuring alignment with broader portfolio and firm-level ESG and energy transition objectives.
  • Leading cross-functional teams across ERM's sustainable energy solutions, M&A, digital, and Corporate Sustainability & Climate Change expert groups.
  • Providing expert insights and guidance to clients and portfolio company management on transforming decarbonization projects into value-generating business models for sustainable long-term growth.
  • Directing energy transition and climate-focused due diligence assessments throughout the investment lifecycle, identifying key ESG and low-carbon economy drivers to enhance value and mitigate operational risks.

To excel in this role, you will possess:

  • Experience in delivering 'investment grade' decarbonization strategies that are board-ready, fully costed, and supported by detailed ROI and MACC analysis.
  • A comprehensive understanding and proven track record in developing plans that extend beyond operational savings to encompass broader business value, including increased revenues, enhanced competitive positioning, reduced operational costs, and improved brand reputation.
  • Experience in managing and successfully executing decarbonization programs for organizations, with an understanding of how these operational initiatives fit within the decarbonization frameworks of private equity and infrastructure clients.
  • In-depth knowledge of energy efficiency measures, renewable energy procurement, low-carbon solutions, industrial decarbonization, and sustainable value chain initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive knowledge of private equity and infrastructure investors and their portfolio operations.
  • Experience in leading strategic engagements at the C-suite level, guiding senior management in interpreting and developing action plans around GHG inventories, decarbonization roadmaps, and setting credible net-zero and science-based targets.
  • Familiarity with energy transition investing, validated Science Based Targets, decarbonization in infrastructure, private equity, and real estate, impact management, life cycle assessments, and Scope 3 abatement programs.
  • Knowledge of standards such as TCFD, SBTi, ULI Greenprint, LEED & BREEAM certification, as well as IRIS+, The Impact Management Project, and the Operating Principles for Impact Management.
  • A background in consulting is advantageous but not mandatory.
