Senior Consultant for Private Markets Decarbonization

At ERM, we are dedicated to assisting our Private Equity clients in their journey towards decarbonizing their investment portfolios, thereby generating value and facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy. Our Decarbonization & Energy Transition Investing Team is experiencing substantial growth while continuing to serve a large base of private equity and infrastructure investor clients.

We are seeking a Principal Consultant to enhance our EMEA operations, collaborating across ERM's industry sectors and business lines to formulate value-driven 'Investment Grade' decarbonization strategies that align with the objectives of both portfolio companies and General Partners, ensuring swift implementation.

The Principal Consultant will leverage existing client relationships while also forging new connections within the private markets investment sector. Internally, you will provide leadership that inspires and engages staff at all levels, contributing to ERM's mission of delivering value-oriented decarbonization strategy development and execution projects.

  • Formulating commercial strategies to identify and secure new business opportunities that lead to significant revenue enhancement.
  • Overseeing the initiation and execution of our clients' decarbonization initiatives, collaborating with their ESG, climate, investment, and operational teams, as well as portfolio company management, to develop decarbonization and energy transition fund strategies, assess and improve against comprehensive climate change metrics and targets, and consolidate performance improvements in preparation for exits.
  • Partnering with our clients' ESG, investment, and operational teams, along with portfolio company senior management, to design and implement 'Investment Grade' decarbonization strategies for both new and existing investments, ensuring alignment with broader portfolio and firm-level ESG and energy transition objectives.
  • Leading cross-disciplinary teams across ERM's sustainable energy solutions, M&A, digital, and Corporate Sustainability & Climate Change expert groups.
  • Providing expert insights, guidance, and support to clients and portfolio company management on translating decarbonization initiatives into value-generating business models, ensuring long-term sustainable business value creation.
  • Directing energy transition and climate-focused due diligence projects throughout the diligence lifecycle, focusing on key ESG and low-carbon economy drivers to enhance value and mitigate risks from an operational standpoint, while offering recommendations for post-investment decarbonization initiatives.

To excel in this role, you will possess:

  • Experience in delivering 'investment grade' decarbonization strategies (board-ready, fully costed, supported by detailed ROI and MACC analysis).
  • A comprehensive understanding and proven track record of developing such strategies that extend beyond mere operational savings from energy efficiency, encompassing broader business value through increased revenues, improved competitive positioning, reduced operational costs, and enhanced brand reputation.
  • Experience in managing and successfully executing decarbonization programs for organizations, with a keen understanding of how these operational projects integrate within private equity and infrastructure clients' decarbonization objectives, targets, and investment processes, as well as the needs of energy transition fund investors.
  • A deep knowledge of energy efficiency measures, renewable energy procurement, low-carbon solutions, sustainable practices for the built environment, industrial decarbonization, and sustainable value chain initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of private equity and infrastructure investors and their portfolio operations teams.
  • Experience in leading strategic engagements at the C-suite level, guiding and educating senior management teams on interpreting and developing action plans around GHG inventories, decarbonization roadmaps, and establishing credible net-zero and science-based targets.
  • Familiarity with energy transition investing, validated Science Based Targets, decarbonization in infrastructure, private equity, and real estate, impact management and measurement, life cycle assessments, and Scope 3 abatement programs, along with supply chain engagement experience with private markets investors across various sectors.
  • Knowledge of TCFD, SBTi, ULI Greenprint, LEED & BREEAM certification, TCFD, and GHG protocol standards, as well as IRIS+, The Impact Management Project, and the Operating Principles for Impact Management is advantageous.
  • A background in consulting is preferred but not mandatory.
