Position Overview

In the Transformers division of Hitachi Energy, we are seeking a Global R&D Compliance Engineer for Materials . This role is pivotal in ensuring that the materials and chemicals utilized in our products and manufacturing processes adhere to the highest standards of environmental, health, and safety regulations while remaining compliant with the dynamic regulatory landscape. You will be instrumental in translating updates on product material compliance into actionable R&D initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and select materials and chemicals for our product lines and manufacturing processes that align with applicable regulations and industry standards relevant to the global transformers sector.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to establish material specifications and requirements for evaluating alternative materials and chemicals.
  • Provide expertise as a materials and processing authority during supplier and internal audits, supporting the supply chain and quality assurance departments.
  • Conduct technology scouting to stay informed about industry trends and advancements in materials science.
  • Design and implement experiments to assess and validate new materials, ensuring they meet necessary performance, durability, and safety criteria.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports detailing the outcomes of material testing, utilizing various characterization techniques such as microscopy, mechanical testing, thermal analysis, and dielectric spectroscopy.
  • Leverage your chemical and materials expertise across diverse material categories, including oils, polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites.
  • Engage with suppliers and vendors to source, assess, and qualify alternative materials and their processing methods, aiming to enhance the sustainability impact of our products while upholding superior EHS standards.
  • Offer technical guidance on material selection, processing, and application to facilitate product development and manufacturing operations.
  • Remain updated on emerging trends, technologies, and regulations in materials science and engineering, evaluating their implications for our products and processes.
  • Generate documentation, reports, and technical specifications related to material characterization, qualification, and compliance, emphasizing the potential of alternative materials for global product groups.
  • Actively seek opportunities to develop intellectual property and create competitive advantages through innovative product solutions.
  • Assist in root cause analysis and resolution concerning material-related issues.
  • Collaborate with regulatory affairs teams to ensure compliance with evolving material regulations in R&D.
  • Support corporate teams in refining the product material compliance checklist to optimize content integration within product development.
  • Participate in external committees and initiatives focused on materials and sustainability standards related to transformers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in methodologies for characterizing materials and chemicals.
  • In-depth knowledge of global product material compliance regulations.
  • Degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Familiarity with global environmental regulations, including REACH, RoHS, and TSCA, with the ability to translate these into R&D actions.
  • Capacity to work independently while managing multiple projects concurrently.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of conveying complex information clearly to various audiences.
  • Experience collaborating with large, complex remote teams in a multicultural environment.
  • Proven project management skills, demonstrating initiative and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, fluent in English; proficiency in other European languages is advantageous.
