About the Opportunity

Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our team as an Intern in the field of FPGA and microcontroller-based systems for imaging and depth sensing applications.

About the Role

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced research staff to develop firmware for the control and data acquisition of imaging and depth sensing systems based on CMOS sensors. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electronics and computer science, with experience in laboratory instruments and programming languages such as C/C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, and Python.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop firmware for the control and data acquisition of imaging and depth sensing systems
  • Study the operating principle of the device to be controlled
  • Design and develop a simple Printed Circuit Board (PCB) for interfacing the device to the microcontroller/FPGA
  • Write and simulate the source code of the firmware that generates the control signals for the device under test and acquires the generated data
  • Develop/modify a graphical user interface (GUI) running on a host PC to control the device and download/plot the acquired data
  • Test the generated firmware in the laboratory and characterize its performance
Requirements
  • B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in Electrical/Industrial/Telecommunication Engineering, Physics (or similar)
  • Knowledge of major subjects related to electronics and computer science
  • Experience in the use of laboratory instruments, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and power supplies
  • Fluent knowledge of written and spoken Italian and English (min. level B2)
  • Relational and teamwork skills
  • Good adaptability, flexibility, and initiative skills
  • Basic knowledge of computer programming, such as C/C++, MATLAB, LabVIEW, Python
  • Basic knowledge of microcontroller/FPGA firmware programming (C, VHDL or Verilog)
  • Basic experience in PCB design
