Job DescriptionDescription

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are key global objectives that will influence national development plans in the coming 15 years. From addressing poverty and hunger to tackling climate change and preserving natural resources, food and agriculture play a central role in the 2030 Agenda. The FAO Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSG) oversees FAO's involvement in the 2030 Agenda's progress and review, collaborating closely with various units within the Organization. OSG also manages the FAO-hosted UN Food Systems Coordination Hub.

The UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) occurred in Rome, Italy from 24 – 26 July 2023, led by the UN Secretary General and Italy, in partnership with Rome-based UN Agencies (FAO, IFAD, WFP), the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub, and the broader UN system. The summit brought together 3300 participants, including delegations from 182 countries, 21 world leaders, 126 ministers, 225 Non-state Actor organizations, and approximately 900 UN system representatives to exchange experiences and guide global efforts towards sustainable food systems.

Following the UNFSS+2, the Secretary-General initiated a Call to Action for expediting Food Systems Transformation, outlining six specific goals. These include integrating food systems strategies into national policies, establishing inclusive food systems governance, investing in research and technology capabilities, encouraging business participation for sustainability, ensuring marginalized groups' full involvement, and securing long-term financing for food systems transformation. The UN Food Systems Hub will continue its mission to facilitate rapid implementation of national food systems pathways, improve UN System coordination, and enhance support ecosystems.


Reporting Lines:

The Consultant/PSA will report to the Deputy Director of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub or other technical officers.


Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Support the preparation of Food Systems Solutions Dialogues, Webinars, and other peer learning platforms to engage National Convenors and the broader Support Ecosystem.
  • Aid Hub activities related to governance and policy cohesion to accelerate food systems transformation and implement national food systems pathways.
  • Liaise with DCO and engage with UN Resident Coordinators, Regional Directors, and Country Teams to provide FSS follow-up support at the national level.
  • Collect and analyze data on food systems and relevant stakeholders in food systems transformation.
  • Conduct research on transformation opportunities, identify emerging issues, and develop a roadmap for food systems shift.
  • Facilitate knowledge exchange, mobilize expert alliances, gather information for consistent messaging on food and agriculture priorities for sustainable development.
  • Create communication and outreach materials on SDGs and the Hub's involvement in the 2030 Agenda.
  • Assist in organizing events (including virtual), meetings, and related activities.
  • Prepare briefing notes, communications, presentations, etc., as needed.
  • Perform any other relevant duties.

Candidates Assessment Criteria:

  • University degree in sustainable development, environment, economics, social studies, or related field.
  • One to five years of experience in advisory services, partnerships, advocacy program management, food finance, program development, or sustainable development policy and planning.
  • Proficiency in English (level C) and one other FAO language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish). For PSA positions, English proficiency is a must.

Technical/Functional Skills:

  • An advanced university degree (Masters or PhD) is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with FAO's work or other multilateral organizations.
  • Knowledge of UN Food Systems Coordination Hub and SDG Agenda.
  • Strong writing skills demonstrated by relevant publications.
