JOB DESCRIPTION

Organizational Setting

FAO's Animal Production and Health Division (NSA) supports member countries to enhance the role of the livestock sector in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One key focus area is assessing how livestock systems interact with the environment. The division has created the Global Livestock Assessment Model (GLEAM) to measure environmental impacts of livestock systems using lifecycle assessment (LCA) to estimate greenhouse gas emissions. To make the model more applicable for shaping mitigation policies, the division aims to broaden the model's scope, update data and methodologies, and develop a new version of the model (GLEAM-X) as a web tool.

Reporting Lines

The Livestock and GHG Emissions Assessment Specialist will report to the Livestock Policy Officer (Systems Analysis).

Technical Focus

The individual will assist the team in expanding and refining approaches to calculate emission baselines and the effects of mitigation actions in livestock systems. They will also propose and execute new cutting-edge strategies for different species and emission sources, gather and standardize global data sets systematically, and ensure proper documentation following international standards.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Review current GHG assessment methods and suggest enhancements based on international guidelines and scientific research.
  • Develop techniques to incorporate post-farm emissions and emissions linked to trading animal products.
  • Create and implement processes to compute emissions for species not currently covered in GLEAM.
  • Develop and implement approaches to measure the impact of specific mitigation measures on GHG emissions.
  • Collect, standardize, and verify relevant data from various sources.
  • Document methodologies, prepare guidelines, and application manuals.
  • Create instructional materials, webinars, and provide support via the project help desk.
  • Aid in preparing scientific publications and reports to validate the methods used.
  • Participate in meetings and conferences to present the methodologies.
  • Undertake any other necessary duties.

Candidates will be assessed based on the following criteria

Minimum Requirements

  • University degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Biology, or related fields.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in evaluating environmental impacts along production chains, especially regarding greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), preferably in livestock agrifood systems.
  • Proficiency in English, French, or Spanish and basic knowledge of another language among Arabic, Chinese, Russian. Proficiency in English for PSA.SBS is acceptable.

  • Knowledge of current discussions and efforts to reduce emissions from the sector.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with different audiences.
