Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Postdoctoral Researcher to engage in innovative research focused on metamaterial-based soft grippers and actuators. This role involves a commitment to a two-year contract, contributing to cutting-edge advancements in soft robotics.

Your Research Team

You will collaborate with a diverse team led by Dr. Lucia Beccai, engaging in a multicultural environment that promotes teamwork and shared research goals.

Research Objectives

The primary focus of this research position is to design and develop advanced continuum manipulators inspired by the functional capabilities of the elephant trunk. Key objectives include:

  • Exploring innovative metamaterial-based soft actuators.
  • Developing multidimensional soft gripping systems.

Main Responsibilities

  • Design and fabrication of continuum manipulators and end-effectors.
  • Conduct parametric and topological optimization.
  • Perform kinematic modeling and analysis.
  • Characterize actuated systems and validate robotic prototypes.

Essential Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design and fabrication of soft systems.
  • Expertise in numerical modeling (Ansys, Comsol) and simulation (MATLAB).
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design tools (SolidWorks, Siemens NX).
  • Experience with fabrication techniques for soft systems, including 3D printing.
  • A strong publication record in relevant fields.
  • Excellent organizational skills for reporting and publishing research findings.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
