ABOUT THE INSTITUTION

The Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) is dedicated to advancing human-centered science and technology to address critical societal challenges and to facilitate the transfer of these innovations to the production sector and society at large. YOUR RESEARCH TEAM

The Soft Robotics and Bioinspired Research Program (SBRP) is under the leadership of Dr. Lucia Beccai. You will engage with a diverse and multidisciplinary team, collaborating on innovative research projects utilizing state-of-the-art facilities.

The focus of this position is to conceptualize and create continuum manipulators inspired by the dexterity of the elephant trunk. Key objectives include exploring cutting-edge metamaterial-based soft actuators and developing advanced multidimensional soft gripping systems.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design and fabrication of continuum manipulators and end-effectors
  • Parametric and topological optimization
  • Kinematic modeling and analysis
  • Characterization and validation of actuated robotic systems

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a closely related field
  • Proven experience and expertise in:
    • Mechanical design and fabrication of tendon-driven and pneumatically actuated soft systems
    • Numerical modeling (Ansys, Comsol) and simulation (MATLAB) of kinematics
    • Computer-aided design for device prototyping and fabrication (SolidWorks, Siemens NX)
    • Fabrication techniques for soft systems, including 3D printing
    • A strong publication record
    • Effective organization and communication of research findings
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English
